For God and Country

CHINGON

The world shook on November 8, 2016. Billionaire and former reality TV star, Donald J. Trump was elected President of The United States.  Trump campaigned under the slogan “Make America Great Again,” a populist and far right call to nationalism. His presidency has promised to enact mass deportation policies, diminish health care for the poor and vulnerable, and has fractured multilateral diplomatic relationships with other countries by promising  to build walls and ignoring multinational agreements to protect the environment.

Controversies have plagued Trump’s early legacy as president. Trump has refused to disclose his tax returns. A former top adviser resigned after an FBI investigation alleged that the individual had unethical conversations and practices with the Russian government during the election. Trump is being investigated by a special counsel on a similar charge. The country is in peril.

Are we more free today than we were on November 8, 2016? Have we grown as a country? Have we lost hope? Are we united or divided? What is the answer? I do not have an answer to the first four questions, but I can answer the last question: God. Our nation’s sovereignty is not dictated by men and women of power, it is dependent on the All Mighty, the one we call the King of Kings: Jesus Christ.

Psalm 22:28 says, ” For the kingdom is the Lord’s and He rules over the nations.” A dysfunctional government may scare us, but we are under the protection of God, “Many plans are in man’s heart, but the counsel of the Lord will stand” Proverbs 19:21. We do not depend on the ways of the world or malicious actions of man. Jesus said it best, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.” On this Fourth of July celebrate your independence. An independence that is eternal and was sealed for all those who believe in Jesus when he died on the cross to cleanse us from our sins. Rejoice in the Lord and be an asset to your community. Love your neighbor. Help the poor. Put politics aside and trust God. Be selfless in your service towards others. There is no greater sign of freedom than knowing that our just and loving God has our nation under His care. God bless you. God bless the United States of America.
